June 28, 2017 – The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority board of directors today formally approved a $ 2.25 million grant for the Woodfin Greenway & Blueway project. Funds will be drawn under the grant over the next three years as various parts of the project are constructed. The Town of Woodfin and Buncombe County are constructing the project under a partnership arrangement, and were co-applicants for the grant. Of the total amount approved, $850,000 will be allocated to the greenway portions of the project, $650,000 to the Whitewater Wave, $600,000 to the future Silver-Line Park, and $150,000 to improvements to Riverside Park. The TDA grant is being made from the Authority’s Tourism Product Development Fund, with revenues to that fund coming from the lodging tax collected via all lodging properties in Buncombe County. The Woodfin Greenway & Blueway project has an estimated total cost of $13.9 million, and the TDA grant brings commitments-to-date to $11.6 million. Woodfin Mayor Jerry VeHaun and Buncombe County Recreation Services Director Josh O’Conner were on hand for the board meeting, and expressed great appreciation on behalf of their citizens.
