Riverside Park was originally built in 1998 after the site was donated to the Town of Woodfin by the owners of Riverside Business Park. The Whitewater Wave will be located in the river adjacent to the park, and the new greenway trail will run through the park. Improvements and updates will be made to the park to provide a new trailer-accsible boat ramp, additional parking, better restrooms, etc., for visitors. Construction is planned for 2019.
Planning and Design
Specific plans have not yet been developed. Once the alignment of the new greenway through the park is understood, and more details related to the Wave project become known, design will commence. Key goals being discussed are providing an improved river access ramp that will allow for trailers, improved parking, and updates/renovations to the restrooms and paved walking trails.
Timeline for Development
Construction is slated for 2019, and will coincide with timing of construction of the greenway through the park and the construction of the Wave.
Costs and Funding
Improvements are currently budgeted at $575,000. Part of the funding will come from the $4.5 million bond passed by Woodfin voters in November, 2016. A grant from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority for $150,000 was approved in June 2017 for Riverside Park. Additional funding will be sought from the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, private foundations, and other sources. Private donations will be critical though.
